Why Christmas is a Turning Point

Time for a Home Ericanomics perspective blog. Now that Christmas has come and gone and they weird days between the busy day and returning to school is upon us, I have had time to reflect on the madness that has now passed.

Even with teenagers in the house (my youngest is still only 9), there is such a massive buildup to the holidays. As a teacher of high school kids, you can feel it, even in the older kids. The school year gets off to a running start and there you are, barreling towards Halloween, tumbling into Thanksgiving and crashing into Christmas.

There is so much that hinges around Christmas. Despite being the start of astronomical winter (the first day usually falls on or around December 21st), the days start getting longer. We are halfway through the school year and there's already been so much excitement, from starting the school year to homecoming and holiday parties. Yes, we really do build right up to this time of the year.

Many people have a strange feeling one the holidays are over. With weeks of preparation and cooking and buying, the days after sometimes feel like limbo. We are tired, broke and full of foods we don't normally eat. I usually spend a good day or two taking down all the Christmas decorations. My house and soul are ready to get back to normal.

And that's where the turning point comes in. Whether you are on the school schedule like we are or simply ready for the new year, most of us are ready to clean up and start fresh. A clean house after Christmas is good for the mind and spirit, in my opinion (we do leave the nativity until Epiphany!). I was grateful to have less "stuff" to put away after Christmas this year. I know that sounds bad, but I am not missing the days of millions of toys and Legos spread far and wide! I really felt like our holiday was simpler this year.

I've already hung up my January calendar and I'm enjoying these relaxing days, but looking forward to the newness of January and the second half of the school year. Despite the first half of the year feeling like a race from one party to the next, I know the second half of the school year will fly by and summer will be here before you know it.

So goodbye to Christmas (for now!) and hello to a new year and a new outlook on the next half of the school year. I welcome a couple of quiet winter months, tucked away until springtime emerges. Yes, Christmas time is a turning point, for many reasons. Maybe your faith has drawn you to the renewed hope in our savior Jesus Christ. Perhaps the new year is a time for self reflection and self care. A week off from work may be just the reset your body needed! No matter what, here's to a healthy and happy new Year! I'm ready!
