I know spring is on the horizon, but this super easy sewing project will warm you right up! A few weeks ago, my friend Shannon had on the most comfortable, snuggly looking shawl! She showed me how simple the design was and suggested that I try making one for my blog. Challenge accepted! This shawl really didn't require a pattern, and it could be customized to the person wearing it too! Let me walk you through this simple little project!First, you'll want to select a high quality flannel or fleece product. I went to a fabric store and chose a high end, luxe, no pill fleece. It was thick and had a pattern on both sides. This shawl definitely had some weight to it. I bought 2 yards and it was a 60 inch wide bolt. I would not recommend buying the fleece made for no sew tied blankets.I brought the fabric home and laid it out on the floor. I did trace the top half of my friend's shawl (she let me borrow it!) and created a pattern of sorts. Here are the measurements I used: width was 48 inches and length was 6 ft (although I think I could have gone shorter, maybe 4-5 ft. Again, it depends on the height of the wearer!). I measured down the center 24 inches and created the opening. The opening was 5 1/2 inches wide and went the rest of the length of the shawl.
I sewed the entire perimeter of the fabric to ensure that it wouldn't curl or rip. On the ends where I added the fringe, I sewed the edge 2 inches from the bottom to allow room to cut the fringe. Once it was sewed all the way around, I cut 2 inch fringes that were only about 1/8 inch wide. I didn't measure, I just eyeballed it and I think they looked fine!Once I was finished, I tried it on and it was like wearing the softest blanket! You could dress this up with some slacks and a long sleeve undershirt or just use it to lounge around. As much as I loved it, I wanted to gift it to my mom, and I she loves it too!
You can totally make this! Now might be a great time to find some deals on fleece fabric. Buy a couple yards and tuck it away for an easy project or Christmas gift next year. This is definitely one project I will be doing again!
